چکیده

Abstract We present a generic mechanism for the thermal damping of compressive waves in interstellar medium (ISM), occurring due to radiative cooling. solve dispersion relation magnetosonic two-fluid (ion-neutral) system which density- and temperature-dependent heating cooling mechanisms are present. use this relation, addition an analytic approximation nonlinear turbulent cascade, model dissipation weak turbulence. show that some ISM conditions, cutoff wavelength turbulence becomes tens hundreds times larger when is added regular ion-neutral damping. also run numerical simulations, confirm effect has dramatic impact on cascade wave modes.

Wave Damping by Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence and Its Effect on Cosmic-ray Propagation in the Interstellar Medium

Cosmic rays scatter off magnetic irregularities (Alfvén waves) with which they are resonant, that is, waves of wavelength comparable to their gyroradii. These waves may be generated either by the cosmic rays themselves, if they stream faster than the Alfvén speed, or by sources of MHD turbulence. Waves excited by streaming cosmic rays are ideally shaped for scattering, whereas the scattering ef...

Thermal Instability Induced Interstellar Turbulence

We study the dynamics of phase transitions in the interstellar medium (ISM) by means of threedimensional hydrodynamic numerical simulations. We use a realistic cooling function and generic nonequilibrium initial conditions to follow the formation history of a multi-phase medium in detail in the absence of gravity. We outline a number of qualitatively distinct stages of this process, including a...

Toward a Theory of Interstellar Turbulence. I. Weak Alfvenic Turbulence

We study weak Alfvenic turbulence of an incompressible, magnetized fluid in some detail, with a view to developing a firm theoretical basis for the dynamics of small-scale turbulence in the interstellar medium. We prove that resonant 3-wave interactions are absent. We also show that the Iroshnikov-Kraichnan theory of incompressible, magnetohydrodynamic turbulence-which is widely accepted--descr...

Anisotropic fluid turbulence in the interstellar medium and solar wind

The interstellar medium and solar wind is permeated by a magnetic field that renders magnetohydrodynamic turbulence anisotropic. In the classic work of Iroshnikov @Astron. Zh. 40, 742 ~1963!# and Kraichnan @Phys. Fluids 8, 1385 ~1965!#, it is assumed that the turbulence is isotropic, and an inertial range energy spectrum that scales as k is deduced based on the nonlinear interaction of Alfvén w...

Interstellar Turbulence in the WarmIonized Medium using Emission LinesBy

The nature of turbulence in the warm ionized component of the interstellar medium (WIM) can be investigated using Fabry-Perot spectroscopy of optical emission lines. The H intensity provides the emission measure (EM) along a line of sight, which is used in conjunction with the scattering measure, rotation measure, and dispersion measure to study interstellar turbulence. Observations at high spe...
